說起滾石唱片，可謂說來話長。相信每一位八九十年代聽中文流行音樂的朋友對「滾石」都有著難以割捨的情節。20年間，滾石唱片代表的不僅僅是台灣本土最大的唱片公司，它更記錄著整個華語歌壇的流金歲月，記錄著一代人的光榮與夢想……

1980年，校園民歌運動的積極參與者段鍾潭、段鍾沂兄弟創辦了《滾石》雜志，由於不滿足在版面上單純介紹西洋音樂，萌發了要製作華人自己的流行音樂的想法。就因為這個簡單的初衷，創辦了滾石唱片，唱片交由世界五大唱片公司之一的BMG發行。滾石一開始的元老就有潘越雲，張艾嘉以及之後的齊豫和羅大佑。極具才華和人格魅力的歌手，團結熱情的緊密團隊，原創加上人文的滾石風格，締造了最初滾石至高的起點。羅大佑的《之乎者也》如一顆「流行樂史的原子彈」，在台島颳起了一股黑色旋風，更堅定了滾石早期創業者繼續探索華人流行音樂的決心。1985年，滾石從日本引進了鐳射唱片技術，生產了首批5張CD。《回聲》成為滾石第一張、同時也是台灣流行音樂史上的第一張CD唱片。1988年，滾石成立了旗下的巨石音樂，擁有林隆璇，張信哲等歌手。同時李宗盛、小蟲、陳升、趙傳的新鮮血液源源不斷。80年代末，滾石成立了友善的狗工作室，推出了趙傳、黃韻玲、張洪量、黃品源等歌手。1989年，海外歸來的羅大佑在香港成立了「音樂工廠」，集合了黃耀明、林夕、花比傲等音樂人製作了《東方之珠》等唱片，同時滾石獲得了杜德偉、梅艷芳的國語唱片製作發行權。

從80年代中期開始，滾石幾乎網羅了包括香港Beyond在內的港台流行樂壇的精英，製作人有羅大佑、陳升、李宗盛、小蟲坐鎮；女歌手方面成功製作了黃鶯鶯、陳淑樺、娃娃、辛曉琪、萬芳等人的專輯；男歌手方面，趙傳、周華健、張信哲、成龍、馬兆駿等人成績頗豐。1989年，張培仁和製作人賈敏恕成立魔岩文化，集合內地的搖滾新勢力在90年代初期相繼推出了黑豹、唐朝、《中國火1》、張楚、何勇等人的專輯，取得空前的社會影響力，滾石的音樂內涵及領域進一步拓展。此時的滾石已達到了鼎盛的顛峰期。

90年代中期，張國榮重返歌壇簽約滾石，林憶蓮、杜德偉加上原來的精兵強將，滾石唱片的陣容無比強大。1996年，魔岩唱片在台灣正式注冊成立，之後推出了楊乃文、順子、李雨寰、陳綺貞和張震岳。作為滾石香港品牌的「龍卷風」也成功發行了莫文蔚、Beyond等人的國語專輯。 蘇慧倫、劉若英、徐懷鈺等年輕歌手的誕生則暗示著滾石後來的偶像路線。

2000年，隨著經濟蕭條市場惡化，滾石將旗下的各家製作公司整合，「龍卷風」畫上句點，同年底，魔岩唱片的創始人張培仁離開魔岩。2001年，「魔岩」也畫上了句號。其後滾石在北京成立了戰國音樂，在上海也設立了發行部，轉向內地發展。時代變遷，滾石的中流砥柱紛紛淡出或離去。目前滾石唱片留有周華健、任賢齊、梁靜茹、辛曉琪、五月天等原班人馬，另外則以F4的偶像劇形式捧紅了許紹洋、李威等人。但如今的滾石已與當年不可同日而語，「滾石」自身的品牌內涵無以後繼，最重要的是滾石曾經傲視群雄的強大創作力已盪然無存，與一般的唱片公司並無二樣。二十年春秋如一夢，滾石如一位拖著疲憊身軀的沒落貴族，積聚著希望，等待著重生……
